μήν 2Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `month' (Il.), also `moon-sickle (Ion., Ar., Att. inscr., Thphr.).Compounds: Compp., e.g. μηνο-ειδής `with the form of a moonsickle' (IA.), PN Μηνό-δωρος, also μηνί-αρχος, - άρχης m. `monthly commander' (pap. IVa; after ταξί-αρχος a. o.); ἠλιτό-μηνος `missing the month' (T118; cf. s. v.), ἐπι-μήν-ιος `lasting a month, montly' (IA.; hypostasis); on - μην- as 2. member Sommer Nominalkomp. 55ff.Derivatives: μήν-η `month' (Il.; like σελήνη, cf. Güntert Reimwortbildungen 220, Risch $35d), - άς `id.' (E.); μην-ίσκος m. `moonsickle', esp. name of several moonsickle-formed objects (Ar., Arist.); μην-ιαῖος `a month old, monthly' (Hp., LXX, pap.), - ιεῖος `monthly' (hell. pap.; Chantraine Form. 49 u. 53), μην-αῖος `belonging to the month' (Orac. ap. Lyd. Mens.; prob. from μήνη); μηνιαστεία f. `monthly achievement' (pap. IIIp), but cf. Μηνιασταί m. pl. ` adorers of Μήν' (Rhodos); μήνιον n. plantname, `peony' (Ps.-Dsc.), for the astrological use, Strömberg Pflanzennamen 133.Etymology: From the Aeol. cas. obl., gen. μῆνν-ος for *μηνσ-ος etc., arose an analog. nom. *μηνς, from which with vowelshortening *μενς, through loss of the nasal and comp. lengthening μείς, resp. μής. To μην-ός etc. (with simplification of the νν) arose μήν, after Ζηνός: Ζεύς El. μεύς. -- Beside the obl. stem *μηνσ- \< IE * mēns- there was originally in the nom. a disyllabic * mēnōs- with lengthened grade or (with alternating -t-) * mēnōt-, from which came Lith. mė́uo `moon, month', Germ., e.g. Goth. menoÞs `month'. The disyllabic form (with full grade) is seen alo in Lith. mė́es-is `month'. On monosyllabic * mēns- are based both Lat. mens-is (gen. pl. mens-um) as (with loss of the -n-) Skt. mās- `moon, month'. The development of the calendrical meaning `month' was accompanied by the creation of new expressions for `monyh' ( σελήνη, luna etc.). Original connection with meh₁-'measure' (s. μῆτις) because of the role of the moon as time-measure is quite possible. -- Further forms WP. 2,271f., Pok. 731f., W.-Hofmann s. mēnsis, Fraenkel s. meṅ́uo, Scherer Gestirnnamen 61 ff.. 5 ἕνος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `old' as opppsed to`new', only in expressions about fruits and officials of the past year, also of the last dayof the preceding month, indicating the new period (Hes.; ἔνη the first day of the month, with Ion. psilosis?); in the last sense mostly ἕνη καὶ νέα (sc. σελήνη; Att. since Solon).Etymology: The general IE word for `old', *sénos, is still found in most branches, as opposed to `new': Gr. ἕνος, Arm. hin, Skt. sána-, Lith. sẽnas, Celt., e. g. OIr. sen; here also OWNo. sina f. `withered grass of last year' (cf. ἕνος βλαστός etc.). Some lnguages use it also as opposed to `young', so e.g. Celtic and Lithuanian, but also Germ., e. g. Goth. sineigs `πρεσβύτης', and also Iranian, Av. hana- `old, grey'; in Skt. sána- is not so used. this meaning became dominant in Italic, Lat. senex, Osc. senateís ` senātūs'. In the East *sénos in this meaning was replaced by the expressive group of von γέρων (s. v.). - Cf. JDoeve, Jewish Hermeneutics in the Synoptic Gospels and Acts, ’54, 185–87). Jer 39:9 and Zech 11:12 use the verb ἱ. in the sense weigh out on scales (Hom.; X., Cyr. 8, 2, 21, Mem. 1, 1, 9 al.; GDI p. 870, n49 A [Ephesus VI B.C.] 40 minas ἐστάθησαν; Is 46:6; Jer 39:9; 2 Esdr 8:25), and some (e.g. BWeiss, HHoltzmann, JWeiss; FSchulthess, ZNW 21, 1922, 227f; Field, Notes 19f) interpret Mt 26:15 in this sense. Of course Mt’s readers would know that coinage of their time was not ‘weighed out’ and would understand ἱ. in the sense of striking a bargain (ἵστημι=set a price, make an offer, close a bargain: Herodas 7, 68 pair of shoes; BGU 1116, 8 [I B.C.]; 912, 25 [I A.D.]; PRainer 206, 10 [II A.D.] κεφάλαιον), they set out (=offered, allowed) for him (=paid him) 30 silver coins (Wlh., OHoltzmann, Schniewind), but the more sophisticated among them would readily recognize the obsolete mng. Ac 7:60 is sometimes interpreted in a related sense, but the absence of a direct object of amount paid suggests that the pass. is better placed in 3 above.B. intr., aor. and fut. forms① to desist from movement and be in a stationary position, stand still, stop (Hom., Aristot.; Philostrat., Ep. 36, 2 ὁ ποταμὸς στήσεται; TestSol 7:3 οὕτως ἔστη ἡ αὔρα) Lk 24:17. στὰς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐφώνησεν αὐτούς Mt 20:32.—Mk 10:49; Lk 7:14; 17:12; 18:40. στῆναι τὸ ἅρμα Ac 8:38. ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἔστησαν Rv 18:17; cp. vs. 15. ἔστησαν ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τοῦ σπηλαίου GJs 19:2. ἔστη ἐπὶ τόπου πεδινοῦ he took his stand on a level place Lk 6:17.
